RFID Blocking Technology Explained — How It Works and What It Actually Protects

You've seen “RFID blocking” on wallets, passport holders, and travel accessories. But how does it actually work? And what does it protect — and not protect?

Here's the technical breakdown, in plain English.

What Is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It's the technology behind contactless payments (Visa payWave, Mastercard PayPass), transit cards, hotel key cards, and some passports. These cards contain a small chip and antenna that transmit data when activated by a reader's electromagnetic field.

How RFID Skimming Works

An RFID skimmer is a device that emits the same electromagnetic frequency as a legitimate card reader. When held close to an RFID-enabled card, it can trigger the card to transmit its data — potentially including card number, expiration date, and cardholder name.

In practice, this requires the skimmer to be within a few centimeters of your card, and modern contactless payment systems have multiple layers of encryption that make intercepted data difficult to use for fraud.

How RFID Blocking Works

RFID-blocking materials — typically a layer of carbon fiber, aluminum, or copper mesh — create a Faraday cage around your cards. This cage absorbs and redistributes the electromagnetic field, preventing it from reaching your cards' chips.

The result: a skimmer held near your wallet gets nothing. The cards don't respond.

What RFID Blocking Doesn't Protect

RFID blocking protects against proximity-based card skimming. It does not protect against:

  • Data breaches at retailers or banks
  • Phishing or social engineering
  • Magnetic stripe skimming (at ATMs or card readers)
  • Online fraud

Is It Worth It?

Yes — because it costs nothing extra in a quality wallet and provides passive, always-on protection. Miravane builds RFID blocking into every wallet as a standard feature, not an upsell. You get the protection automatically, without thinking about it.
